Celebrating International Coffee Day

How do you take your coffee? Black? White? Sweet? Strong?

No matter your preference, go ahead and fix yourself a cup in honor of International Coffee Day, celebrated worldwide on October 1st. You can even feel good about it too, as it not only tastes great, but several worldwide studies have shown that coffee is actually good for you!

Benefits of Coffee:

  • The caffeine in coffee increases energy levels in the brain, which in turn can improve mood, reaction time, and mental function.
  • Studies show that metabolic rates can increase up to 11% and even increase fat-burning in lean people by up to 29%.
  • By signaling adrenaline levels in your body, the caffeine in coffee can improve short-term physical performance by 11-12%.
  • Nutritional: The average cup of coffee contains 11% of your daily recommended vitamin B2, 6% of your daily recommended vitamin B5, 3% of your daily recommended potassium, and 2% of your daily recommended B3.
  • Although it’s not yet known why, when compared to those who don’t drink coffee, coffee drinkers have significantly lower rates of disease including diabetes (up to 67% lower), Alzheimer’s and Dementia (up to a 65% lower), and Parkinson’s Disease (up to 60% lower).
  • Those who drink 4 cups of coffee or more per day have up to an 80% lower risk against cirrhosis of the liver.
  • Four cups of coffee or more per day have also been shown to decrease depression in women by 20% and lower rates of death by suicide by 53%
  • Coffee has been shown to lower the risk of cancer by 40% in the liver as well as reduce colorectal cancer by 15%
  • Evidence has shown that women who drink coffee have a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Drinking coffee has been associated with a lower risk of death (20% lower for women and 30% lower for men).
  • In Western diets, coffee has one of the highest antioxidant contents, more so than the average person’s daily consumption of fruits and vegetables combined.
