Create a Chinese New Year Feast with Leo Foods

Chinese Lunar New Year (aka Spring Festival) is a festive time for many people all around the world. This year it falls on Sunday 22nd January 2023 and the festive celebrations will continue for at least 15 days after!

This important festival marks a new year on the Chinese lunar calendar, as well as the arrival of Spring. Families and friends get together in many parts of Asia to celebrate this major event, putting up decorations, giving red envelopes and gifts, and most importantly – sharing delicious traditional Chinese food.

So, as the Year of the Rabbit approaches, what better way to celebrate, than handpicking some scrumptious Chinese cooking essentials from Leo Foods this Chinese New Year.

Longevity Noodles

This intriguingly named dish is commonly served during Chinese New Year because they represent the wish for a long life. The noodles are never cut or broken by the cook and the noodle should be eaten whole (without cutting it!) or legend has it – your life might be cut short! These noodles are super easy to whip up, taking around 10 minutes in total. We recommend using egg noodles, but you can replace them with any noodle of your choice – but make sure not to cut them! Check out our full range of Chinese egg noodles here!

Chinese Dumplings

During Chinese New Year, it’s said that the more dumplings you eat during the New Year celebrations, the more money you will make in the New Year! And we’ve got everything you need here at Leo Foods to get the New Year off to a wealthy start! These delicious snacks are unbelievably easy to make, but if you’re not feeling adventurous, we have a selection of frozen ready-made dumplings on offer in store too. All you need is some all-purpose flour, water and a delicious filling of your choice.

Spring Rolls

These crispy little bites from heaven actually got their name from Chinese New Year. Crunchy on the outside and flavourful in the middle, the humble spring roll is a versatile dish, but when it comes to Chinese New Year, eating these crunchy rolls is supposed to symbolise a bar of gold, bringing wealth and prosperity for the year ahead. We have a range of both spring roll pastry and ready-made spring rolls by leading brands such as TAJ and Spring Home here at Leo Foods, so you can cook up a feast!

Glutinous Rice Balls

These plump and chewy rice balls, made from glutinous rice flour and water, are served during Chinese New Year as a symbol as togetherness and family reunion – one of the most important aspects of this festive season. Whilst they’re relatively bland on their own, a deliciously tasty broth is most often served with them, or they can even be filled with pastes of all flavours. Grab some ready-made glutinous rice balls from our freezer section – you won’t be disappointed!

We also stock a huge range of Chinese spices, pastes, oils from leading brands such as Heera, KTC and Aroy-D as well as snacks and canned and frozen foods, so you can create the Chinese New Year feast of your dreams this Lunar New Year!
