Soups From Around the World: Ingredients You’ll Find at Leo Foods Marbella
There’s something incredibly comforting about a good soup. No matter where you come from, you’ll find a version that brings people together – slow-cooked family recipes, punchy broths full of spice, or simple soups that give you a good old warm up.
We’re very lucky here on the Costa del Sol. Marbella is home to people from all over the world, and with that comes a genuine love for international food. At Leo Foods, we’ve spent over 30 years bringing global ingredients to our community – making it easy for you to recreate the soups you grew up with, or discover something completely new. Soups are incredibly diverse and very forgiving too – you can chuck almost anything in a pot and create something delicious!
In this blog post, we’ve put together a few favourites from around the world, along with the key ingredients you can pick up right here at Leo Foods.
Romanian Goulash – Eastern European Comfort
Goulash has a long history across Eastern Europe, and Romania’s version is especially hearty. It’s rich, warming, and generously seasoned with paprika – giving the soup that deep colour and unmistakable flavour.
To make it properly, you’ll want good-quality paprika (sweet or smoked), potatoes, caraway seeds, onions, garlic, tomatoes, and stock. Serve with polenta, dumplings and/or mashed potatoes.
Mulligatawny – India’s Spiced, Creamy Classic
Mulligatawny is one of those soups that blends cultures beautifully. Originating from ‘rasam’ in Tamil cuisine, it evolved into a richer, creamier dish that usually includes plenty of vegetables, red lentils, curry spices, coconut milk, and sometimes chicken.
The combination of curry powder, red lentils, and coconut milk creates a comforting balance of warmth and creaminess. We stock several curry blends and a wide selection of Indian ingredients, so it’s easy to customise the soup to your taste – mild, spicy, vegetarian, or protein-packed.
Hot & Sour Soup – China’s Perfect Balance
If you love bold flavours, Chinese hot and sour soup is a winner. Hailing from Beijing, it’s tangy, spicy, and full of texture from mushrooms, tofu, and bamboo shoots. A good broth starts with soy sauce, vinegar, and white pepper – all of which we carry in multiple Asian brands.
Harira – Morocco’s Nourishing One-Pot Favourite
Harira is one of Morocco’s most loved dishes – a filling, tomato-based soup made with chickpeas, lentils, herbs, and warming spices like turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger. It’s especially popular during Ramadan, but delicious all year round.
We carry a full range of North African ingredients, including chickpeas, lentils, tomato paste, and traditional spice blends like ras el hanout. With a few basics from your pantry and some fresh herbs, Harira comes together quickly and easily.
Tom Yum – Thailand’s Spicy, Citrus-Packed Broth
Tom Yum is a brilliant example of how a handful of ingredients can create huge flavour. With lemongrass, lime, chilli, and herbs at its core, it’s fresh and aromatic, and perfect when you want something both light and warming. It’s also pretty low in calories too, coming in at around 150 calories per serving.
A lot of our customers like to keep things simple by using Tom Yum paste, and then adding mushrooms, prawns, or chicken. We also stock coconut milk if you prefer a creamier version (Tom Kha).
