Chinese New Year

Celebrating Chinese New Year

This year, the Chinese New Year falls on 5th February and it will start the Year of the Pig, according to Chinese astrology. The Pig is the twelfth animal in the Chinese zodiac and in Chinese culture the animal is a symbol of wealth, with their chubby faces and big ears also symbolising good fortune. People born in the Year of the Pig have their birthdays in 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 and, of course, 2019.

Leo Foods in Nueva Campana is an international food wholesaler and retailer, and we can help you celebrate the New Year in traditional Chinese style, because we stock all the ingredients needed to make some of the most popular dishes served by Chinese families at this time of year.

Celebrate at home

Instead of opting for the always-popular Chinese takeaway from your local restaurant, why not experiment with creating a Chinese banquet for all the family. Whilst Leo Foods has supplied products to the restaurant trade and a select number of supermarkets for many years, we are also open to any members of the public who want to expand their culinary repertoire with Chinese food products. You can think of us as the Chinese supermarket where you will be able to buy everything you need for oriental dishes. Furthermore, our prices are unbeatable for both retail and wholesale customers.

Host a Chinese New Year theme night

Theme nights are always well received by pub and bar clientele. Take advantage of our wholesale service to create a tasty and authentic experience for your guests. As a leading food and drinks wholesaler and distributor on the Costa del Sol,  we pride ourselves on the service we offer to the restaurant and bar trade, and we’ll be delighted to help you with your selection of products required to provide an array of Chinese dishes that will stun your customers.

Some typical Chinese New Year recipes

The BBC Good Food website offers a selection of easy-to-cook dishes that will ensure you enjoy an authentic taste of China, whether you are a retail or wholesale customer at Leo Foods. For example, the hot and sour prawn and sweetcorn soup is considered the perfect starter. Moreover, it’s warming, which will work a treat with the lower temperatures on the Costa del Sol at this time of year. Leo Foods has the silken tofu, beansprouts and the rice vinegars needed for a tasty bowl of yumminess. And for those with a sweet tooth, toffee banana spring rolls served with coconut ice cream are a real treat. You’ll need some Chinese Five Spice and toasted black sesame seeds, as well as spring roll pastry for this.

Leo Foods stocks a fantastic range of Chinese products

Our selection of Chinese and Oriental products is outstanding. It includes an entire range of frozen, chilled and ambient Oriental food products, including purees and pastes, Shanghai and Soba noodles, Thai sticky rice and Jasmine rice, as well as bamboo shoots, lemongrass and all the spices and condiments needed for oriental dishes. We also have ready-made spring rolls and rice cakes, as well as all the sauces and oils used in Chinese cooking.

That just leaves us to wish you successful cooking on either the eve of Chinese New Year (4th Feb) or the 5th of February – and “Gong hei fat choy” (Cantonese) or “gong xi fa cai” (pronounced gong she fa tsai) in Mandarin. These translate as “wishing you great happiness and prosperity.”
